Income Threshold Slider

Drag an SS, Ordinary, or LTCG handle on the black AGI line up or down to adjust only that income source. Each handle is linked to its slider above. The dark-gray Roth Conversion handle moves a separate proposed line; the diagonal band shows the added AGI. Use arrow keys for $1,000 steps. Highlighted bubbles show the brackets reached.

The bracket overlay assumes fully pre-tax IRA funds and excludes tax-funding withdrawals; the projection below calculates those separately. Total tax includes federal income tax, estimated state tax, and NIIT; excludes Medicare premiums and payroll tax.

Annual conversions, tax funding & balances

Balances come from the Estimator's funding accounts; NQ combines all positions. Conversion and tax payments occur at the start of each year, followed by 8% growth. The full conversion reaches Roth; additional tax is paid from NQ sales first (including tax on realized gains), then grossed-up IRA cash withdrawals. Conversions are reduced if the IRA cannot fund both conversion and taxes. This is an account-mix illustration, not a retirement cash-flow plan: no RMDs, spending withdrawals, baseline-income funding, Medicare costs, early-distribution penalties, fees, annual NQ tax drag, or changing tax law/inflation. Income sliders and 2026 tax assumptions stay constant for all 20 years. Balances are before future liquidation taxes; Traditional IRA is not after-tax spendable wealth. Returns are hypothetical, not guaranteed. The bracket flags exclude the extra tax-funding sales/withdrawals; the figures below include them.

The black line is AGI; the dashed green marker is taxable ordinary income after the selected deduction. Ordinary brackets and stacked LTCG rates use taxable income. IRMAA and NIIT use MAGI, assumed equal to AGI here. The threshold-spaced vertical scale keeps small brackets readable. At an exact ceiling the next ordinary bracket is not yet engaged; IRMAA applies above its threshold.

Simplified illustration: AGI = ordinary income + net LTCG/qualified dividends + taxable Social Security. Gross SS is not added in full. The three inputs are independent; LTCG is no longer capped by the AGI entry. Typing AGI or dragging the black line adjusts ordinary income, keeping SS and LTCG fixed; AGI cannot fall below their combined contribution. Sliders start with $200,000 SS and $2 million ordinary/LTCG ranges; typing larger dollar amounts expands the range and chart. Effective rate = (regular federal ordinary + LTCG tax + estimated state tax + NIIT) ÷ AGI. NIIT remains limited to investment income; conversion income can increase MAGI and trigger NIIT on existing gains. State estimate applies the selected planning rate to federal taxable ordinary income + taxable LTCG, assuming the same deduction. This is not a state-specific tax return: state exclusions, deductions, credits, progressive brackets and preferential capital-gain rules may differ. No tax-exempt interest, credits, age-related deductions, itemized limits, AMT, payroll tax, or special capital-gain rates. IRMAA figures are the 2026 reference, not a forecast of future premiums. Red-box annual totals = full Part B premium + Part D IRMAA surcharge, excluding the separate drug-plan premium. Joint assumes two enrollees; other filing statuses assume one.
